LearningMole – a ProfileTree project – recently celebrated the launch of the first educational Alexa ‘skill’ to be produced in Northern Ireland.

LearningMole is already an established publisher of learning resources thanks to the expertise of director and educational consultant Michelle Connolly.

A Northern Ireland First

The High Five Maths skill, an interactive learning tool for young children using voice commands, focuses on educating children in key skills of Maths, English and learning through crafts.

It continues the LearningMole mission to – Michelle explained – “offer advice and practical, interactive ideas to help parents challenge, teach and develop their children’s skills at home”.

“The Alexa skill itself is an easy, fun way to practise mental maths with children. It can be used in the classroom, for home-schooling, at home or independently by the children themselves.

LearningMole Launches Alexa Educational Resource

“The skill gives immediate feedback, gives children time to answer questions and allows the questions to be repeated. It is perfect for building number fluency and speed in mental calculations.

“The levels have been designed to suit different age ranges and abilities as well as being – of course – closely related to curriculum concepts,” she added.

LearningMole Media Coverage

The LearningMole resource adds new lessons regularly and, although it boasts users across the globe, was recently featured in the Belfast Telegraph, Sunday Life and SyncNI news outlets locally in Northern Ireland.

The LearningMole team also includes ‘The Boss’ six-year-old Aaron Connolly and four-year-old Creative Director James Connolly. Both are very active LearningMole product testers!

Michelle Connolly is a teacher with over 16 years teaching experience both internationally and throughout the UK and Ireland.

She explained the thinking behind setting up LearningMole: “Education today can be mine field for parents, I know as a parent and primary teacher myself methods of learning are constantly changing and it can be difficult to keep up

“The strategies we were taught as children are almost non-existent and it can be difficult to support your child at home as you learn the new methods they are exploring in school.

“The words ‘that’s not how I did in school’ are what inspired me to set up LearningMole, until I became a parent myself I didn’t quite realise how challenging homework, home schooling and generally supporting your children could actually be.

“I have been teaching children from 4 -11 years old for the past 14 years in the UK, Dubai and Egypt – that’s over 2730 days teaching nearly 400 children and every day is different. I love teaching and I learn something new every day from my classes as well as from my own children.

“The way children think and approach learning situations is amazing and I hope that you will get to experience similar amazement while working with your own children. Always have high expectations and always be ready for your children to challenge your thinking.”

Michelle added a reminder: “You don’t need any special hardware for this Skill and can even use it on your phone. It’s an easy and free addition to your children’s learning kit. Just activate ‘Kids Skills’ on your phone, enable the skill and you are ready to go. Enjoy learning and have fun!”
