SEO Pricing in Northern Ireland: What SMEs Actually Pay

Updated on:
Updated by: Ciaran Connolly

An SEO retainer for a Northern Ireland SME usually costs £300 to £750 a month at entry level, £750 to £2,000 for a properly resourced programme and £2,000 to £5,000 or more for premium work. In the Republic of Ireland, the same scope works out at roughly €350 to €900, €900 to €2,350 and €2,350 to €5,850 a month.

The entry band pays for basic on-page fixes and a light monthly report, while the middle band adds a technical audit, ongoing content, link building and a monthly strategy call. Premium retainers add digital PR and optimisation for AI search. ProfileTree’s own retainers start from £600 a month, and our SEO Northern Ireland page explains how we run them for businesses across the region. A quote that sits well below these bands for ongoing work is rarely paying for real monthly effort, and it usually means automated reporting or link tactics that carry a risk of a Google penalty later.

Most business owners who research SEO costs are told that it depends, which is true and of little use when you have three proposals on the desk. The figure on an invoice tells you very little on its own. What decides whether a retainer is good value is what sits behind it: the hours, the named people doing the work and the deliverables you can check each month. This guide sets out the bands for both jurisdictions, what each should buy, how pricing differs for Irish businesses and the questions that show whether a proposal is sound.

SEO retainer bands for Northern Ireland and Ireland

The table below shows monthly retainer bands for businesses in Belfast, Derry, Armagh and the rest of Northern Ireland, with approximate euro equivalents for businesses in the Republic. The euro figures are conversions at roughly €1.17 to the pound and are rounded; the scope of work in each band is the same on both sides of the border.

BandMonthly spend (GBP)Approximate monthly spend (EUR)Typical hoursCore deliverablesWhat we recommend
Entry level£300 to £750€350 to €9004 to 8Basic on-page fixes, one monthly report, little or no link buildingSuitable for a sole trader in a low-competition local niche; ask exactly what is left out
Mid tier£750 to £2,000€900 to €2,35010 to 25Technical audit, content creation, link building, monthly strategy callThe right starting point for most SMEs with real competition
Premium£2,000 to £5,000€2,350 to €5,85025 to 50 or moreFull strategy, digital PR, AI search optimisation, videoWorth it for competitive sectors, UK-wide or all-island targets
Enterprise£10,000 or more€11,700 or moreDedicated teamNamed specialists and integrated marketing operationsOnly where several markets or brands are run together

These are ongoing monthly figures for retained work. Two agencies quoting the same monthly figure can deliver very different work, so the table gives you the range and the proposal should show how the hours map onto it. If you are comparing local providers, look at how SEO services for Belfast businesses are scoped in practice, because a provider who can explain their hours line by line is far easier to hold to account than one who quotes a single number.

Project fees sit outside the monthly bands

A standalone technical audit usually costs £500 to £3,000 (about €600 to €3,500), depending on the size and complexity of the site. A website migration that protects existing rankings typically adds £3,000 to £8,000 to the development cost. If you are pricing SEO alongside a rebuild, it helps to see what a WordPress website costs and, separately, what managed WordPress hosting adds each year, because migration work touches both budgets.

Retainers suit ongoing work and projects suit finite work

A retainer makes sense for a business with an established site and a continuing need to defend or grow its rankings against active competitors. You are paying for continuity, with the same team tracking algorithm changes, content performance and technical health from one month to the next. SEO results build on earlier work and stall when attention stops, which is why the monthly structure exists at all.

Project pricing suits a defined piece of work with an end date, such as an audit before a rebuild, a one-off content gap analysis or support during a platform change. The fee is lower because nobody is monitoring the account afterwards, and nothing continues once the project closes. Some businesses commission a project first so they can size the retainer that follows, which saves them from guessing at scope before they sign anything ongoing.

The simplest test is whether the work has a natural end point. If it does, it should be priced as a project. If its value depends on someone watching the account every month, a retainer is the honest structure, and an agency that proposes a retainer for what is really a two-week task is padding the hours.

A retainer should show what happens each month

An invoice with no breakdown behind it is a warning sign in its own right. A properly run programme should be able to show you a plan along these lines before you sign:

  • In month one, the agency carries out a technical audit, fixes crawl errors, reviews the site’s structure and sets up tracking and reporting correctly.
  • In months two and three, the first content is published against an agreed keyword plan, priority pages are optimised and outreach for links begins.
  • From month four onwards, content production and link building continue against a target list rather than a volume target, and each monthly report explains what changed and why, with a quarterly review against actual ranking and traffic movement.

An agency that cannot describe the difference between month two and month six is either running every client through the same template or not planning the work. Ask for this breakdown in writing; it costs a competent provider nothing to produce.

Pricing for businesses in the Republic of Ireland

Irish businesses buying SEO from a Northern Ireland agency pay for the same hours and deliverables as a business in Belfast, so the bands in the table apply with the euro conversions shown. At ProfileTree we quote Republic of Ireland clients in euro, which removes the currency guesswork from a monthly budget, although the euro figure for a given scope will move a little as the exchange rate moves between contract renewals.

VAT works differently across the border. When an Irish business buys services in the course of business from a supplier established outside the State, Revenue’s reverse charge rules generally make the Irish business responsible for accounting for the VAT itself. In practice, that usually means an invoice from a Northern Ireland agency to an Irish VAT-registered business carries no UK VAT. The details depend on your VAT status, so confirm the treatment with your accountant before you budget.

Competition is the larger cost driver for Irish buyers. A Dublin business chasing citywide service terms usually needs more content and more links than a business in a smaller county town targeting its own area, which can push the same goal from the middle band into the premium band. All-island campaigns, which target customers on both sides of the border, typically run £1,500 to £3,000 a month (roughly €1,750 to €3,500) because they need separate local pages and separate local signals for each market. If you are a smaller Irish business weighing up fixed monthly packages, our guide to SEO packages for small businesses in Ireland sets out what each level usually includes.

Very low quotes rarely fund real work

A £200 retainer cannot pay for meaningful monthly work. Once overheads and margin are covered, that budget buys perhaps two or three hours of actual labour, which is enough for a templated report and not enough for technical fixes, content or link building. The gap is usually filled in one of three ways.

Automated reporting stands in for analysis, so you receive a monthly document that says work happened without evidence of what changed. Contractors spread across dozens of accounts apply the same checklist to every client, because no time has been budgeted to understand your sector or your competitors. Where links are built at all, they often come from low-quality or automated sources that give a short-term lift and leave a long-term liability, and recovering from a penalty tied to spammy links can take six to 12 months and cost more than years of properly priced work.

Cheap SEO can occasionally work for a very low-competition local search with one or two target terms. For anything with real commercial competition, the arithmetic does not support results at that price, and a provider quoting far below the entry band should be able to tell you exactly what has been cut to reach the figure.

Sector competition changes the band you need

The band you need depends more on your sector than on the size of your business. Legal services sit at the expensive end because personal injury, conveyancing and family law terms attract firms from across the UK and Ireland, so sustained visibility usually needs upper mid-tier or premium spend.

Healthcare and medical content falls under Google’s standards for “Your Money or Your Life” topics, where author credentials and editorial transparency count for more than in most sectors. Hospitality and tourism businesses benefit from strong local intent but need a planned content calendar and a review strategy to hold their visibility through seasonal peaks. Property and construction firms face long buying cycles, and pausing spend between cycles tends to cost more in lost authority than it saves. Technology and software companies usually need something close to the premium band, because long B2B sales cycles call for a large volume of comparison and feature content.

Prices in Northern Ireland sit below London and the south-east of England for structural reasons rather than as a reflection of quality. A smaller commercial market means less intense competition for most local search terms, and lower regional overheads let NI agencies charge less for comparable delivery hours. If you are comparing a Belfast quote with a London quote for the same scope, the lower figure is not automatically the weaker option.

SEO usually takes four months to a year to pay back

Google’s own guidance, in its page on whether you need an SEO, says that in most cases an SEO needs four months to a year to make improvements and for your business to see the potential benefit. Plan your budget around that window rather than around a single quarter.

The first three months are mostly technical. Crawl errors are fixed, the site structure improves and pages that were invisible start to be indexed properly; you may see early movement on long, low-competition searches, but this phase builds the foundation. Months four to six usually bring measurable progress as rankings rise and early content starts to gather authority, and months seven to 12 bring compounding returns as established pages gain strength.

New pages face a steep climb, according to an Ahrefs study published in May 2025, which found that only 1.74 per cent of a random sample of new pages reached Google’s top 10 within a year, and that the average page ranking first was five years old. That is the clearest evidence that sustained investment holds a ranking and a single strong quarter does not.

Grants rarely pay for SEO directly

Northern Ireland and the Republic both have digital grants, and none of the main schemes is designed to fund an SEO retainer. It is worth knowing what each one covers so you do not plan a budget around money that will not arrive.

The Digital Transformation Flexible Fund, delivered by the 11 Northern Ireland councils and supported by Invest NI, offers small and micro businesses grants of £5,000 to £20,000 covering up to 70 per cent of eligible costs. It is a capital fund for advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation and data analytics, so it may help with an AI or data project that sits alongside your search work, and it will not pay for monthly SEO. Invest NI’s Business Innovation Grant also offers £5,000 to £20,000 at a 70 per cent rate, for SMEs that are not Invest NI clients and are developing a new or significantly improved product, service or process.

In the Republic, the Local Enterprise Offices run the Grow Digital Voucher, which covers 50 per cent of eligible costs up to €5,000 for businesses with up to 50 employees that have completed a Digital for Business project in the previous two years. It is aimed at software and the training and configuration that go with it rather than at agency SEO services. Application windows and eligibility rules change, so check the current position on nibusinessinfo.co.uk, investni.com or localenterprise.ie before you rely on any of them.

Six questions that test an SEO proposal

A good agency answers each of these directly, and hesitation or vagueness on any of them tells you something real about how your account would be run. Put them to every agency on your shortlist, in writing if you can, so you can compare the answers side by side.

  1. Ask for rankings the agency has achieved for a client in your sector, because a credible provider has specific examples you can check rather than a generic case study.
  2. Ask what your monthly report will show beyond a list of completed tasks, because it should explain what changed, why it changed and what it means for the next month.
  3. Ask who will work on your account each day and what their experience is, because you are paying for expertise that should be traceable to a named person.
  4. Ask what happens if rankings plateau, because a competent agency has a diagnostic process and repeating the same activity is not one.
  5. Ask whether the agency ranks its own site for the services it sells, because a site it controls completely is the fairest test of its ability.
  6. Ask what is included at the bottom of the band you are quoted and what is cut at that price, because the answer shows whether the quote is honest about trade-offs.

No legitimate agency can guarantee a specific ranking, because none of them controls Google’s algorithm. Treat a guaranteed position as a reason to walk away.

Work out what a customer is worth before you set a budget

Start with your customer lifetime value and your conversion rate. As a hypothetical example, if your average customer is worth £1,000 in margin and your site converts 2 per cent of visitors, each additional organic visitor is worth about £20, and that figure tells you what monthly spend is rational before you open a single proposal. Be honest about your internal capacity too, because an agency that charges less but expects your team to implement its recommendations can cost more in practice if delays push the timeline out by months.

The most expensive mistake is to treat SEO as a commodity. A cheap retainer that produces nothing costs more than a properly priced one that brings in qualified traffic, because competitors keep building their position while you stand still. Budget for at least 12 to 18 months, and if you are weighing the cost of the site itself against the cost of ranking it, our breakdown of how much a website costs covers that side of the budget. As search shifts towards AI assistants, it also helps to understand how AI search optimisation works, because premium retainers increasingly include it.

Ciaran Connolly, founder of ProfileTree, puts it this way: ‘After building hundreds of campaigns across Northern Ireland, the link between investment and results is clear, but only when that investment buys real expertise. We have seen £750 monthly campaigns outperform £3,000 programmes because the cheaper option focused on fundamentals while the expensive one chased vanity metrics. What matters is that your money pays for strategic thinking and consistent execution, not just impressive proposals and monthly reports.’

Questions about SEO pricing in Northern Ireland and Ireland

What is the average monthly cost of SEO in Northern Ireland?

Most SMEs spend £750 to £2,000 a month on a properly managed campaign. Below £750 you are usually buying limited human input supported by automated tools, and above £2,000 you should expect strategic depth, regular content and reporting that ties work to results. All-island campaigns covering Northern Ireland and the Republic typically cost £1,500 to £3,000 a month.

How much does SEO cost in Ireland?

For the same scope of work, an Irish SME can expect roughly €350 to €900 a month at entry level, €900 to €2,350 for a mid-tier programme and €2,350 to €5,850 for premium work. Businesses targeting competitive Dublin terms usually sit in the upper half of these ranges, while a business targeting its own county town can often stay in the middle band.

Do Irish businesses pay VAT on SEO bought from a Northern Ireland agency?

In most business-to-business cases, an Irish VAT-registered business accounts for the VAT itself under Revenue’s reverse charge rules, so the invoice from a Northern Ireland agency usually carries no UK VAT. The treatment depends on your VAT status, so check it with your accountant.

How do I know whether my SEO agency is doing the work?

Check that the monthly report names the pages changed, the links built and where they came from, and the content published, and that it ties each item to a ranking or traffic movement. A report that only lists generic activity, such as ongoing optimisation or continued outreach, suggests the retainer is running on autopilot.

Can I get a grant for SEO?

In most cases a grant will not pay for SEO directly, because the main Northern Ireland schemes fund advanced technology or innovation projects, and the Grow Digital Voucher in the Republic focuses on software and related training. One of these grants may fund a technology project that supports your search work, so check the current rules with your council, Invest NI or your Local Enterprise Office.

Why do some agencies charge so much less?

Usually the scope is limited to basic reporting, the work is outsourced to low-cost contractors with no oversight, or the links come from sources that risk a Google penalty. Recovering from an algorithmic or manual penalty can take six to 12 months and cost more than years of properly priced work.

Does SEO pricing include content and video?

Mid-tier and premium retainers should include content production, and premium retainers often include video. Entry-level packages usually do not. If a proposal has no line for content at all, ask about it directly, especially in a competitive sector.

How long does it take to see results?

Google’s guidance says four months to a year in most cases. Plan for at least 12 months before you judge the full return, and expect early movement on less competitive searches first.

Ask for a scoped quote with the hours written down

Before you sign with anyone, ask for a proposal that names the people on your account, lists the monthly hours and shows what happens in months one, three and six. ProfileTree’s search engine optimisation service works this way for businesses in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain, and you can reach the team on 028 9568 0364 or at agency@profiletree.com to talk through the band that fits your market.
