Wedding Venue Website Design: The Rathsallagh Country House Case Study

Updated on: Updated by: Dina Essawy

ProfileTree, a web design and digital marketing agency based in Belfast, designs and builds websites for hotels, wedding venues and hospitality businesses across Ireland and the UK. This case study covers the full rebuild for Rathsallagh Country House, a 17th-century country house, wedding venue and championship golf estate in Co. Wicklow, including a migration that protected the property’s existing search rankings and a content structure built around the services that generate revenue.

The Challenge Country House Hotels and Wedding Venues Face Online

A country house hotel sells something a website is unusually bad at conveying. The product is atmosphere: the gravel drive, the open fires, the walled garden in June, the feeling of having the place to yourself. A couple choosing a wedding venue makes one of the largest purchases of their lives, largely on the strength of what they see on a screen before they ever visit. If the website undersells the property, the enquiry goes to a venue that photographs worse but presents better.

The second problem is structural. Estates like this sell several genuinely different things to several different audiences: exclusive use weddings, civil ceremonies, overnight stays, dining and Sunday lunch, corporate meetings, golf, and guests attending someone else’s wedding who need a room and directions. Each is a separate search intent that needs its own page with enough substance to rank and to persuade. Older hotel websites compress all of it into a handful of thin pages, which leaves the highest value services with nothing capable of competing.

There is also a difference between brand and category. A well-known property with awards behind it will rank for its own name without much effort. The commercial opportunity sits in the category terms: wedding venues in a county, country house hotels in a region, hotels near a particular town or racecourse. Those searches come from people who have not yet decided where they are going, and a site that only performs on its own name is capturing demand it already had. Closing that gap is a matter of sustained search engine optimisation rather than a one-off fix at launch.

“A country house sells a feeling, and most websites flatten it,” says Ciaran Connolly, founder of ProfileTree. “Rathsallagh had the awards, the estate and forty years of reputation, and a website that could not show any of it. Rebuilding it was about giving the property room to be seen, then making sure the pages that bring in weddings and stays could actually be found.”

About Rathsallagh: The Project

Weddings and Civil Ceremonies sections on the Rathsallagh Country House wedding venue website

Rathsallagh House is a country house hotel and wedding venue in Co. Wicklow, set in hundreds of acres of parkland with its own 18th-century walled gardens. It has been in the ownership of the O’Flynn family and operating as a country house for around forty years, and many of the team have been there since the beginning. It sits close to Punchestown Racecourse, Naas and Kildare, roughly fifty minutes from Dublin Airport.

The offer is broad, and every part of it is strong. Exclusive use weddings, where the couple and their guests have the entire house and estate to themselves. Civil ceremony settings include the Walled Gardens, the Orchard, the Orangery and the Granary. Individually styled bedrooms, named rather than numbered. An award-winning restaurant and a breakfast recognised four times by the National Breakfast Awards. An 18-hole championship golf course on site, along with tennis, snooker and a jacuzzi room. The property is a member of Ireland’s Blue Book, a multiple winner of Irish Country House of the Year, and in 2026 was voted the second most romantic setting in Europe by Historic Hotels of Europe.

The website was the weak link. It did not convey the character of the estate or the premium experience guests actually receive. Technically, it was constrained: design capability was limited, content space was restricted, and the underlying structure did not support strong search performance. The pages covering the highest value services, weddings above all, lacked the depth, visual impact and strategic content needed to compete for the terms couples search.

What We Did: The Wedding Venue Website Design Approach

Design That Carries the Property

The brief was to make the screen feel like the driveway. That meant leading with photography and film at a scale the old platform could not accommodate: the house at dusk, the walled garden, the Granary set for a ceremony, aerial views across the estate, and virtual tours for couples and event planners who want to explore before booking a viewing.

Restraint mattered as much as scale. The palette, the botanical line illustrations and the generous spacing were chosen to sit quietly behind the photography rather than compete with it. For a property whose selling point is understated period elegance, a busy interface actively contradicts the pitch.

Content Depth on the Pages That Earn Money

Every high-value service was given a page substantial enough to rank and persuade on its own, replacing sections that had previously been too shallow to do either.

Weddings became a full section rather than a page: exclusive use, ceremony settings for each of the indoor and outdoor options, a gallery, testimonials, a detailed FAQ page answering what couples actually ask before enquiring, and a separate page written for wedding guests, who arrive with entirely different questions about rooms, directions and timings. Accommodation, dining and Sunday lunch, meetings and private events, and golf each received the same treatment, with real detail on menus, capacities and what a stay involves.

The FAQ and guest pages deserve a specific mention because they are easy to dismiss as administrative. In practice, they answer high intent questions in a format that both search engines and AI answer surfaces extract cleanly, and both now pull substantial visibility for the estate.

A Migration That Protected Rankings

The site was rebuilt on WordPress, which removed the content and design constraints of the old platform and gave the team editorial control. Handling that kind of professional web development in-house meant the build could be shaped around the content structure rather than the other way round. The important technical decision was less visible: the existing URL structure was retained, so the pages that had accumulated years of search equity kept their addresses through the migration rather than being redirected into a new pattern.

Migrations are where hospitality websites most often lose ground. Retaining the URLs meant the rebuild started from the rankings the property had already earned instead of rebuilding them, which is why the commercially important pages hold strong positions today rather than working their way back towards them.

Search Strategy Built on Category Intent

Keyword work concentrated on the terms that bring undecided buyers, not the ones the property already owns. Wedding venue searches across Wicklow and Leinster. Country house hotel searches by region. Accommodation searches around Naas, Kildare and Punchestown, where demand spikes with the racing calendar. Dining, Sunday lunch and dog-friendly stay searches that help fill midweek and off-peak.

Results

Rathsallagh launched with a website that finally reflects the property, and with a structure built around the way its buyers search rather than around the way the business is organised internally.

The clearest result is that the pages which previously could not compete are now the strongest performers on the site. Weddings, accommodation, dining, the wedding guest page and the wedding FAQs all rank near the top of the first page for their core searches, several of them in the top three. The wedding section as a whole now generates the largest share of the site’s search traffic, which is exactly what a venue of this type needs.

Search performance has also improved steadily rather than spiking and settling. Traffic has grown in every month measured since launch while visibility held level, which means the improvement is coming from the site converting the same audience better rather than from seasonal search volume. That is the pattern to look for after a rebuild.

Category visibility is now established alongside the brand. The estate ranks on the first page for regional wedding venue and country house hotel searches across Wicklow, including the terms couples use before they have chosen a shortlist. Brand searches convert exceptionally well, and the high-intent variants around pricing, wedding packages and the brochure convert at rates most venues would not expect, which tells us the pages are persuading once people arrive.

International demand is visible in the data and worth reading closely. Ireland accounts for the majority of traffic, with meaningful volumes from Britain, the United States, Australia and Canada, and strong engagement rates from those markets. That pattern is the signature of diaspora and destination wedding interest, and it is an audience the estate can now market to with a site that shows the property properly. Mobile carries most of the traffic and outperforms desktop on both ranking position and engagement, which matters for a venue whose buyers research together on a phone.

Taken together, Rathsallagh now has pages for every commercial service ranking where they need to be, category visibility that reaches couples before they shortlist, and a platform the team can update without a developer. The next phase is straightforward: moving the regional wedding venue terms from the lower half of the first page into the top three, and building out the Naas and Punchestown accommodation content where visibility is already substantial.

How ProfileTree Approaches Web Design for Country House Hotels and Wedding Venues

Hospitality projects start with a commercial question rather than a visual one: which services generate the most revenue, and does each of them have a page capable of competing for the searches that lead to it? On most established venue websites, the answer is no, and that gap is where the work is.

From there, the sequence is consistent. Map the audiences, because a couple planning a wedding, a guest attending one, a golfer and a company booking a conference are four different journeys. Give each high-value service enough depth to rank and to persuade. Protect existing search equity through the migration rather than trying to rebuild it afterwards. Lead the design with photography and film, because in this sector, the imagery is the product. Then hand over a platform that the venue can run itself, since seasonal offers and awards need publishing when they happen. Where a team would rather not handle updates internally, managed WordPress hosting covers maintenance, security and platform updates on their behalf.

For hotels, wedding venues and hospitality businesses considering a rebuild or a platform migration, our web design services for businesses across Northern Ireland, Ireland and the UK cover the process from strategy and architecture through to launch and ongoing support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a website redesign cost a hotel its existing rankings?

Not if the migration is handled properly. The largest risk is changing URLs without a complete redirect map, and where the existing structure is sound, the safest route is to retain it. On this rebuild, the existing URL pattern was kept through the platform change, which is a significant part of why the key pages hold strong positions rather than working their way back up after launch.

What should a wedding venue website include?

Enough depth to answer a couple’s real questions before they enquire: ceremony options with capacities, what exclusive use actually includes, indicative pricing or a brochure route, menus, accommodation for guests, and genuine photography of the spaces rather than styled stock imagery. A separate page for wedding guests is worth building, because they arrive with different questions and generate significant traffic in their own right. Testimonials and an FAQ page matter more here than in most sectors, because the purchase is high value, made once, and driven by reassurance rather than price.

How do you make a country house hotel look premium online?

Photography and film first, at scale, and then restraint everywhere else. The interface should recede so the property is what the visitor looks at. Virtual tours are worth the investment for venues selling spaces rather than rooms, because a couple or an event planner wants to understand how the day flows through the building. Typography, spacing and colour all need to match the register of the property, since a five-star estate presented in a busy template reads as a contradiction and buyers notice.

Should a venue target its own name or the category terms?

Both, but only the category terms grow the business. A well-known property will rank for its own name regardless. The commercial opportunity is in searches such as wedding venues in a county, country house hotels in a region, or hotels near a specific town or racecourse, because those come from people who have not chosen yet. Brand searches show whether the pages persuade. Category visibility decides how many people see them.

How long does it take to see search results after a hotel website rebuild?

Where the migration preserves URLs and the new content is stronger than what it replaced, key pages usually hold or improve within the first few months rather than dipping. Category terms take longer, typically three to six months, to move meaningfully, and continue improving after that. The pattern to look for is traffic and engagement rising while visibility holds steady, which indicates the site is converting the same audience better.

Can a hotel team manage a WordPress site like this after launch?

Yes, and it is worth insisting on. Menus change with the season, offers are time-limited, and award announcements are only worth publicising while they are current, so a platform that needs developer involvement for routine updates will fall behind the business. Training at handover matters less for showing which buttons to press than for agreeing on which tasks are self-serve and which should come back to the development team.
