“Learning never exhausts the mind.” – Leonardo Da Vinci
Inspired by cake making and designing TV shows Amanda Pacion owner of The Cakebaketress decided to have a go at creating her own cakes. What she didn’t realize was that she would discover an amazing talent. When the orders for her creations started flowing in Amanda started to consider cake designing, decorating and baking as a viable business.
What inspired or motivated you to become a Cake Designer/Baker?
I was inspired by watching shows like Cake Boss and Cupcake Wars to take up cake decorating, and not long after I did, people started ordering from me. I didn't think I was ready for it, but they did, so I trusted them and started dreaming of leaving the corporate world to start my own cake business. About 7 months later I took the full leap and have been on my own for a little over a year and half!
Tell us about a day in the life of a Cake Designer/Baker?
Days look different depending on the volume of your business, time of year and specific assignments, but as the owner of my company I'm involved in every facet of my business, from customer service, to keeping up with the finances, ordering supplies, shopping for ingredients, concentrating my efforts on marketing and networking and of course, on baking and cake decorating!
What are the advantages of working for yourself?
In my case, I love not working in an office and that none of my days look the same. I love creating a design with my clients and seeing it out to completion and being able to see their excitement when I deliver it. That is so gratifying!
What are the disadvantages of working for yourself?
I am still building my business as a relatively new business owner, so I look forward to the day when I have at least one or two employees and can get help with deliveries and baking. There are so many things to do in any given week that I never feel like I have enough hands, feet and time to complete it!
Who are your customers?
I started with friends and family as my clients, and then my Facebook page and blog as well as word of mouth started to attract friends of friends. Now I am reaching people who have no connection to me through organic searches on Google. I also have a couple online profiles and customer reviews that bring occasional business. Satisfied customers are the best marketers!
What advice would you give to someone starting a business?
I would say take leaps of faith and take risks where they need to be taken (like me quitting my full time job), but also consider that there is some work to be done before you may really make an income. Following your dreams can turn into a nightmare if you haven't done your homework and really considered the costs of a startup company. Also, don't just expect to open up your doors and watch people flood in. As the person in charge of your company's success, formulate a plan to build exposure prior to making a serious launch and be on top of its execution! You are never done marketing, Always consider it to be as important as operations, because you won't have any clients to satisfy if you aren't somehow getting your name out there.
What is your favourite or most popular product/service?
I sell mostly creative, custom specialty cakes, so although I have tried to push other products more heavily, I have been able to catch the most business from specialty cakes. These are cakes that are personalized toward the recipient and the client and I always collaborate on the designs. If I come up with it, they usually personalize it. It's a fun process. I also have a fondant ruffle, ombre cake that is a big seller.
How big a role does Social Media play in your business?
I am really blessed that Social Media has been really helpful in spreading the word and fits perfectly with my particular business. People love browsing through cakes that are visually appealing, so when a fan "likes" my photo on Facebook, it publishes in their newsfeed and then all of their friends are exposed to the pictures and I am likely to get viral traffic. It's also great when clients post about me or include my cakes in their party blog. Pinterest has also helped boost my website traffic, although it's not all local, it helps with Google ranking to have increased traffic.
