“A smile happens in a flash, but its memory can last a lifetime.” - Anon
You have spent days, weeks and months planning the big event, everything is organised down to the finest details, all the lists are checked. The planning seems to take a lifetime, yet the actual day goes by in a flash! Why not capture these precious moments on film - have memories that will last a lifetime.
Gaffey Productions is a family run business who are passionate about videography and photography. Starting out as hobby, they had the passion and drive to transform this hobby into a successful business capturing the most special moments in their customers lives. Gaffey Productions tell us about their journey.
What inspired you to become involved in Videography?
We always had a love for everything camera and editing related, recently we had to opportunity to transform our love and hobby into Gaffey Productions. We couldn’t be happier than when we are in the middle of the excitement from a Wedding Day or some big event like fashion shows or charity events. There is a great sense of satisfaction when you are in the editing room and everything comes together beautifully. To answer your question simply: we just love what we do. What are the advantages of working for yourself?
One of the main advantages is, that you are your own boss – you can realise your ideas and make your creativity work. Also you can spend more time as a family together. Working from home means that you can look after your little children and care for them.
What are the disadvantages of working for yourself?
You don’t know when to stop. The PC is on 24/7 and you always have something to do, thinking about new ventures, working on new ideas and how they can be implemented. You sometimes forget to stop and relax, sometimes you just don’t know when to close the office door and finish for the day.
What has been your greatest challenge so far?
Getting the word out, getting customers to know you and what you do. This takes a long time as word of mouth is still the best form of advertisement. We just need some patience to wait for everyone to slowly find out that Gaffey Productions are the best Videographers around.
What are your greatest achievements?
Although we are only in business since 2011 we have already quite a good repertoire behind us. Also we love variety and can showcase not only Wedding Videos but also Promo-Clipsw e are offering for SME and Co-Operations we were involved in.
How do you ensure worklife balance?
This is a question that we have asked ourselves and to be honest we haven’t found the perfect formula yet. Most people say that you need to start early and have a set finish time, while always looking for ways to improve your efficiency. This is great advice and if you look at all the bigger companies they all have metrics for improving their performance and are usually excellent at time management. We have tried to mimic this approach and we measure our performance constantly, online/offline activities, ways to streamline editing etc etc ... Here is where our formula fails: start early and have a set finish time along with time management! As you might know we work from home and have a young child. One of us always needs to be looking after the young fella so our most productive time seems (and has) to be when he is gone to bed as we are both starting and stopping all day taking turns minding him and then working late. I’m sure this is the same problem most people have working from home but if anyone can answer the question “How do your ensure worklife balance” I’d love to read it in the comments.
What would be the ultimate goal for your business?
We would love to expand the business over the next few years, get to a stage that we can hire staff and get some likeminded people into the business that love what they do as much as we do!
Who are your customers?
Everybody – it could be you! From private events to corporate functions and advertising we are filming everything. If you are a SME you need to stand out these days. More and more customers not only shop online but compare and search for businesses online too. It is important that you have a 24/7 sales man on your website – informing your customers what you have to offer and what you can do for them. Studies have showed the people spend more time on your website and are more likely to buy you product/services if you have a good video on your homepage. Weddings are also a big part of our business and a part we love. We know that when we are recording a wedding that this will be shown and passed down the generations. The true value of a Wedding DVD will only be appreciated as time passes. As the years go by and you can look back on loved ones that have since passed away or maybe looking back at children on the DVD that are now grown up. We think this is just priceless to have and this is why we get such high job satisfaction from what we do.
What advice would you give to someone starting a business?
Start slow, love what you do & be patient – success does not come overnight. It’s also important to network as much as you can. Online – offline, it doesn’t matter. Let everybody know that you are here and help others as much as you can, don’t just look for support from people but also give it whenever possible! People will remember you a lot more for the help you give rather than the pitch about your business and it’s nice to be nice.
Name one thing that you could not live without in your business
Too many things to name just one.
